6 Days Is All It Would Take if the Trucks in America Stopped

Hey World, are you watching what is going on this year with the Trucking Industry? Are you studying the trends, which affect American Business and therefore affect the World Wide markets for every commodity, currency and service known to man? The markets, which drive policy and change, politics and wars? Well what is going on in the transportation sector is nothing short of intense. Fed Ex bought American Freight Ways, also owns Viking and bought RPS previously, now these all make up the Fed Ex Ground Team. Fed Ex has been buying Computerized Custom Clearing houses. Swift Transportations main stockholder bought Dick Simon Trucking who then acquired Westways. Consolidated Freight is bankrupt. Yellow and Roadway merged and are now upping the ante on USF Bestways. Most large trucking companies reported high profits, even with the nearly $3.00 per gallon pump prices for fuel, due to the passing of those costs onto their customers.

Westways allowed many pieces of new equipment to be turned back in prematurely to Freightliner, who owns the used truck sales division, Select-A-Truck and Sterling. Freightliner is owned by Daimler Chrysler who also owns Western Star Trucks. Freightliner had fired their CEO, as 40,000 old trucks are now parked waiting for sale, but do not meet new EPA emissions standards so they are sold to Mexican Trucking Companies who a have different rules even though pollution does not stop due to borders or man made lines drawn in the desert sand. US Express has bought six smaller trucking companies this last year while 1000s of smaller trucking companies folded due to increased fuel costs and Logistic Online help to improve efficiency. Now in the midst of all of this the OSHA people decided that 8 hours is all that should be allowed for truck drivers to drive. Citing Safety as a reason yet could not come up with any concrete evidence that fatigue was causing accidents. Probably Union PAC driven. That did not fly as accidents for trucks went up as drivers tried to speed to accomplish more miles in a day.

Now there are road projects going full speed in many states due to surpluses from last years tax boom, more fuel sold means more road tax, while other projects were put on hold from the questionable future of the economy due to the same fuel prices, Fed promising to continue rates, which they must do and weather issues, coupled with some restructuring of public debt by several states.

What we fail to realize is that if we do not manage our trucking and transportation issues correctly, we could have serious issues in our distribution system. Why should we care? Well if all the trucks were to stop in 4 days grocery stores would start to run out of food and there would be chaos in the streets within 6 days and if things were not restored it would go down hill from there quickly. Think about it.
